Textile Artist
The central theme in my work seems to be celebrating the beauty and value of color and patterns in God's creation. Often, I feel compelled to use symbols and colors I believe were culturally sublimated when Black people were transported to this country from our homeland. In Africa, past and present, art contains symbols and colors which stimulate an understanding of the forces of life. Also, African art inspires the collective values of people and reminds them of moral precepts. This was lost to us. So, I re-introduce the emphasis of these elements in my artwork to enhance the cultural acuity of African Americans; as a result I am able to share the essence and creative legacy of our people with the world.
