Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How can I take a "test drive" of a horse I'm interested in buying?

A. We welcome visitors and prospective clients at our Whitesburg location: Sierra Springs Equestrian Center. We recommend that you call us in advance to make an appointment. Tuesdays-Saturdays are best; Sundays and Mondays are possible by special arrangement. We will make every attempt to accommodate your schedule; however, some days we will be away collecting new horses. We are happy to provide an appropriate saddle and bridle for your test ride. BYO helmet (required for riders under 18) and footwear. We welcome pre-purchase vet checks by any vet you select. We are also happy to send you a video of one or more of our horses to preview before coming out to see us in person.

Q. How can I be sure the horse I want will be available when I come out to see/ride/purchase it?

A. The only way we can "hold" a specific horse (or saddle) for a prospective customer is with a deposit. Upon receipt of your deposit, we will take the horse or saddle off the market for up to seven (7) days. Deposits are 20% of the For Sale price and are non-refundable (your deposit will be applied to the purchase of any of our horses/saddles). We may put a temporary hold on the horse for 24 hours pending receipt of your deposit via Western Union. If you do not wish to send a deposit, simply call in advance of your visit and we will give you a description of the horses and saddles that are currently available.

Q. Just what is a "performance horse"?

A. A performance horse (think "high performance" like a sports car) possesses the breeding, expert training, athletic ability, and attitude to excell in a competitive activity. There are performance horses in many disciplines, such as dressage, track racing, eventing, and in our case, Western versatility classes (reining, sorting, penning, etc.). Scott seeks out horses that will offer the best value for his customers in a range of sizes, ages, and prices. Every Scott Morris Performance Horse has been thoroughally checked for soundness, test-driven to identify strengths and aptitudes, provided with a custom diet, and given regular exercise and tune-up training to reinforce/add to its skill set -- so the horse you choose is ready to go home with you and get right to work for you.

Q. Why should I buy a performance horse?

A. If you enjoy competition and want to get to the next level, you may need a more talented horse-partner than the one you started with -- a horse with a really good handle who possesses a variety of skills that you can tailor to your favorite discipline. Having a performance horse will allow you to focus on improving your competitive skills. If and when you are not engaged in competitive events, consider this: When you are out on a trail, do you want a horse that can manuever quickly to avoid obstacles? One who is responsive to you and does not spook, buck, misbehave, or have trouble getting along with other horses? If you want the best horse in the arena and the best horse on the trail, consider buying a performance horse. Scott Morris Performance Horses are available at many price points, so there is no excuse to ride a lazy, unsafe, or uncooperative horse!

Q. Do you also provide training services?

A. Scott has started hundreds of green horses, and training has been a big part of his repertoire for decades; however, his current focus is on identifying a diverse roster of well-bred, well trained horses for his customers.
-- If your horse has a specific issue, Scott will be happy to address it for you. The fee is $35 if you bring your horse to the Sierra Springs/Whitesburg location; or $70 (plus a mileage allowance for long distances) for Scott to come to you.
-- If your already-broke horse needs a tune-up, Scott is accepting a limited number of horses-in-training at the barn: a one-month tune-up costs $600 (fee includes boarding).

Q. Can Scott recommend someone to start and train my green horse?
